Senior Generator Technician

  • Role Summary:
  • The Senior Generator Technician is a top-level field expert responsible for diagnosing, repairing,
  • maintaining, and commissioning complex generator systems. This role serves as a technical
  • authority within the service department, providing leadership, advanced troubleshooting, and
  • mentorship to junior technicians while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and
  • customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and control system issues on diesel,
  • natural gas, and bi-fuel generators.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting on engines, alternators, switchgear, paralleling
  • systems, ATS, and digital control platforms.
  • Conduct load bank testing, start-up, commissioning, and acceptance testing of generator
  • systems.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals to resolve system failures.
  • Perform major overhauls, engine rebuilds, and component replacements as required.
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications, NFPA 110, NEC, EPA, and local
  • codes.
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for complex service issues.
  • Mentor and train junior and mid-level technicians in diagnostics, safety, and best
  • practices.
  • Assist service management with technical guidance, repair strategies, and job planning.
  • Support emergency response and critical power outages as a lead technician.
  • Communicate effectively with customers regarding system condition, repairs, and
  • recommendations.
  • Complete detailed service reports, diagnostics documentation, and repair records.
  • Identify and recommend system upgrades, preventative maintenance, and compliance
  • improvements.
  • Maintain professional conduct and represent the company at a senior technical level.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Perform work in a manner that ensures personal safety, team safety, and equipment
  • protection.
  • Maintain required certifications and licenses.
  • Job Requirements:
  • 7–10+ years of hands-on generator technician experience
  • Extensive experience with commercial and industrial generator systems (20kW–3MW+)
  • Advanced electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills
  • Strong working knowledge of ATS, switchgear, and paralleling controls
  • Ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • OEM certifications (Cummins, Caterpillar, Kohler, MTU, Generac Industrial, etc.)
  • Factory training on digital control systems and paralleling gear
  • NFPA 110 familiarity and compliance experience
  • Electrical license or equivalent technical certification
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and outdoor environments
  • Willingness to travel locally and participate in on-call rotation
  • Ability to work extended hours during emergency response situations
