Review and refine filters

Check the filters Tahoe read from your request, correct them, and search on filters alone.

Before Tahoe spends any credits on a search, it shows you the filters it will search with. You can fix what it misread, add what it missed and remove what you do not want. Checking and changing filters is always free: you pay only when you press Search.

The same filter window opens in three places:

Check what Tahoe read

Describe the person

On Search → New Search, type who you are looking for and press the arrow. The window opens and says “Reading your search…” for a moment while Tahoe fills in the fields.

Read the filters

The title changes to “Here’s what Tahoe read.” Each value is a small chip. Click the x on a chip to remove it, or type in a field and press Enter to add one.

Press Search. Tahoe runs the search and opens the results. Results and contact details

From your description, Tahoe fills in only the job title, state, country, skills, spoken language and minimum years of experience. It never guesses the fields under More filters: you add those yourself.

  • If you name a city, Tahoe puts its state in the filters, not the city. Add the city yourself only if you really need it.
  • If you name no place at all, Tahoe adds United States as the country. Remove that chip to search everywhere.
  • If Tahoe cannot read your description, the window says “Couldn’t read that search. Fill in the filters below, or try again.” Nothing is charged.

Filters that narrow and filters that rank

Every filter does one of two things:

  • Narrows the search. People who do not match are left out of the results. Most filters work this way.
  • Ranks people first. Nobody is left out. People who match are moved toward the top. These fields say so in their name: Speaks (ranks them first), Worked at (ranks them first) and Holds certification (ranks them first). Skills work this way too.

Ranking filters are safer when the data is thin. Many profiles do not list languages or certifications, so leaving out everyone who does not list one would also leave out good people.

Every filter

Main filters

FilterWhat it doesEffect
Job title (up to 2)People who hold the title now, held it before, or have it in their headline. Exact matches rank first. If almost nobody holds a very specific title, Tahoe may drop a leading word (Yard Operations Supervisor becomes Operations Supervisor) and still rank exact matches first.Narrows
StateWhere the person lives, such as Ohio. Several states mean any of them. A state narrows the country.Narrows
CountrySuch as United States. Several countries mean any of them.Narrows
Skills (up to 3)Moves people who list the skill toward the top. Put the most important skill first: Tahoe ranks on the first skill, and with no job title it searches on it.Ranks
Speaks (ranks them first) (up to 2)A spoken language other than English, such as Korean. Speakers move to the top. With no job title or skill, the language becomes what Tahoe searches for.Ranks
Require this languageA switch that appears once you add a language. Turned on, it leaves out everyone who does not list the language.Narrows
Minimum years of experienceTotal years of work experience. Tahoe applies it from 3 years up; a smaller number has no effect.Narrows

More filters

FilterWhat it doesEffect
City (narrows the search, use sparingly)Only people listed in that city. This cuts the results a lot, so prefer a state unless distance really matters.Narrows
IndustryPeople who have worked in that industry, such as Healthcare, in any role in their history.Narrows
Region (up to 3)A whole region, broader than a state or country, such as APAC, EMEA or Europe.Narrows
Worked at (ranks them first) (up to 3)People who worked at the company at any point move to the top. On its own, the first company becomes what Tahoe searches for.Ranks
Holds certification (ranks them first) (up to 3)People with the certification, such as PMP or CPA, move to the top. On its own, it becomes what Tahoe searches for.Ranks
Management level (up to 3)Pick from a fixed list (below).Narrows
Department (up to 3)Pick from a fixed list (below).Narrows
Currently employedAny, Yes or No. Yes keeps only people with a current job; No keeps only people without one.Narrows when set
Decision makerAny, Yes or No. Yes keeps only people marked as decision makers.Narrows when set

Management level choices: C-Level, Director, Founder, Head, Intern, Manager, Owner, Partner, President/Vice President, Senior, Specialist.

Department choices: Administrative, Consulting, Customer Service, Design, Education, Engineering and Technical, Finance & Accounting, General Management, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing, Medical, Operations, Product, Project Management, Real Estate, Research, Sales, Trades, Other.

Within one field, several values mean “any of these” (Ohio or Michigan). Different fields combine: a state narrows the country, and a city narrows the state.

Search with filters only

Skip the description when you already know what you want. On New Search, click Filters next to the search box. The window is titled Search filters and starts from whatever you set earlier in this visit. Fill in the fields and press Search. Tahoe names the search after its filters, for example “Product Manager · speaks Korean · New York, United States”, so you can find it later in Search Histories.

Clear all empties every field. Cancel closes the window without searching.

Refine a search from the results

On a results screen, the Filters button shows how many filters the search used. Click it to open Refine this search, filled in with the filters behind the results you are looking at.

Change what you need

Add, remove or edit filters. Nothing is charged while you do this.

Search again

Press Search. Refining runs a new search and opens its own results screen. The new search is charged like any other: 2 credits for its first page.

Go back if you prefer the old results

Use your browser’s Back button to return to the previous results. Pages you already loaded there stay free to view.

Examples

Example

Korean-speaking sales manager in Texas, 5+ years, Korean required

Tahoe reads the job title Sales Manager, the state Texas, the language Korean and 5 years of experience. Turn on Require this language so that people who do not list Korean are left out. If the results get very small, turn it off again: speakers are still ranked first.

Example

Plant manager with SAP near Dayton

Tahoe fills in the job title Plant Manager, the skill SAP and the state Ohio (Dayton is a city, so Tahoe uses its state). To keep only people with food industry experience, add Industry Food under More filters. Add the city Dayton only if the person must already live there, because a city cuts the list sharply.
